Letter to Sen. Ben Nelson

I received this from an old friend, M. Wayne Power. I worked for him in Holdrege way back before I went to the Navy and, although no longer living in the 3rd CD, he has plenty of ties to it. He has asked me to help him in a quest to at least attempt to get our sole Democratic representative in Congress from the State of Nebraska, Sen. Ben Nelson, to reconsider the way he has been voting.

I concur with Mr. Power, in that those of us in Nebraska, and those of us within the Nebraska Democratic Party, that consider ourselves Liberals haven't a single voice from Nebraska that will stand up for us. Three House representatives and one Senator are all very conservative Republicans. Must we just roll over and accept the fact that, even though we Liberals probably represent at least 20% of the voting populace in this state, the only Democrat that could represent us ... won't?

Mr. Power also has a very thought provoking blog at http://mwaynecomments.blogspot.com/ I would hope that you take some time to read it, and to reply to his articles. Wayne is retired, has plenty of time, and loves to debate the issues he has presented there.

Below is a copy of an e-mail that I have sent to Senator Nelson. Help me out with this. You know way more real Progressive Democrats that I do. I'm asking all of my progressive friends that I can think of to copy the text of this communication, sign it and forward to Ben Nelson and to advise me when they do it. If every true Progressive in the State will do this maybe, just maybe we can get his attention. Give me your thoughts on this. Thanks

Senator Ben Nelson
This communication is to protest your conservative voting record and failure to support President Obama's legislative agenda. Progressivepatriots.com awarded you a Progressive Action score of 6 which means you voted to support a slate of progressive actions only 6% of the time during the 110th Congress. You also had a right-wing index score of 75. A score of 75 means that you acted to support a slate of conservative wrongheaded policies in the 110th Congress 75% of the time. You ran for your office of Senator as a Progressive Democrat. You have and are failing to support the progressive causes that the voters that elected you desire. I sincerely request, actually demand that you change your stance of supporting the oligarchy which financed you campaign and start supporting the needs and desires of the grass roots Progressive democrats of Nebraska and the rest of the Country. The overwhelming 2008 election results which totally discredited the failed policies of the Conservative Republicans should convince you that the voters are fed up with the politics of the past. If you hope for any future support from me or thousands of others like me you will start supporting the progressive agenda.
Yours truly,
Wayne Power

  1. This HealthCare Bill is NOT about reforming HealthCare....It's about growing the governments POWER over "WE THE PEOPLE". If this passes , I promise that it will be the beginning of "THE SECOND CIVIL WAR". As if there hasn't been enough spending already. These Democrats in DC have put us in over 11 Trillion dollars in debt. Obama is by far the "WORST PRESIDENT EVER" ! Obama and ever single DEM are trying to bankrupt America, so we are forced to use a new Government system - a socialist one. I'll be damned if I sit by and watch America the Beautiful fall because these "Socialists In Democratic Clothing" are destroying the very fabric in which "WE The People" formed the greatest free country on Earth from. Sen Ben nelson is a coward and a sell-out , and "HELL WILL HAVE A WARM PLACE FOR HIS TRAITORING ASS TO SIT IN FOR ETERNITY" I promise you that. nancy pelosi should know that herself. The people in Nebraska who voted for Sen Nelson should hold thier heads in SHAME for voting for anyone but a Republican. We have to take America back ! These democrats have been violent at rallyies since the 50's and I think it's time we get a little violent ourselves. Consider it a CRUSADE , because as GOD as my witness....that's exactally what it is. Christmasis the day we recognise the birth of our savior Jesus Christ ,well WE may be witnessing the REBIRTH of Freedom in America !May GOD be with you and your families and pray for our beloved America to win the war against socialism.

  4. I copied Mr. Hansen's response here at his request since he was having difficulty posting it. I had to split it into two parts due to its length. - Brian T. Osborn

    Mr. Dear Anonymous and Anonymous:

Unfortunately I can’t address you by your names, unlike Mr. Power, because despite all your courageous talk about “repercussions,” civil war, and “cowards,” you don’t seem to want to share your identity. But then again, I wouldn’t want to share my stupidity with the world as I make death threats to an 83 year old veteran of World War II (Good going by the way). Unfortunately, your comments and ignorance represent the true threat to our democracy, not the Presidency of Barack Obama or the legislation currently being debated.
Because your arguments (I use the term loosely) seem to follow no logical order, I’m just going to go ahead and work through your brilliant essays in the order in which they were posted.

As far as the national debt, (and I would recommend you look up a few sources on your own), your statement regarding the Democrats being solely responsible for running up the national dept is sadly misinformed. Please note, that unlike your rabid partisan claim, I am not laying the sole blame on the Republican party; however, please note that during the six years the Republican party held the Presidency and the House, there were deficits and the debt increased. Democrats and Republicans both share blame for this issue and to claim either party is solely to blame is sadly misinformed.

Now as far as socialism or communism and whatever the hell you are raving about, where does someone from Nebraska get off on trashing socialism? Explain how a corn subsidy that artificially inflates the price of corn, rather than let the free market determine the price, is not a socialist policy.

As you clearly love our democracy, let’s take a little look at your rather twisted interpretation. I must admit, I am a little confused over how a public policy would modify our form of government, as you say “Obama and ever single DEM are trying to bankrupt America, so we are forced to use a new Government system - a socialist one,” I am pretty sure that we will remain a representative democracy whether the healthcare bill passes or not. Democracy, as you may know from the two weeks of school you undoubtedly attended, is built on the idea that the people are given a voice in choosing their government. So please riddle me this: how is hanging your head in “SHAME for voting for anyone but a Republican” uphold this idea of choice? I can think of other countries that have a one-party system. Here’s a hint: 5 letters, names with a C, ends with an A, and we owe them a lot of money. I am also a little confused over you advocating getting “a little violent ourselves.” Isn’t the strength of this country that you love so dearly that we can freely debate issues and public policy without fear of violence?

While we are on the topic of violence, since you love this country so dearly, how would a civil war benefit this country? Then again, the first went so well that a sequel would be a perfect idea. I for one enjoy the thought of paying taxes to rebuild the portion of the country belonging to the losing side. See chapter on the Reconstruction Era in an American History book.

You are also apparently a devout follower of Jesus Christ. Can you tell me where in the Bible Jesus advocates smiting those who disagree with him? Or perhaps where in the Bible it says that you shouldn’t share with those less fortunate than you? The idea of caring for the less fortunate is one of the major tenets of Jesus’ teachings (an undoubtedly socialist idea). continues

Now anonymous number 2. Again, I am pretty sure the idea of democracy is that the nation is the people’s nation, not “your country.” To borrow a phrase from the recent election in Massachusetts, it is the people’s seat. As English is apparently not your first language, I am not sure if you are referring to Mr. Power as a “Nigga” (DEATH WILL BE SLOW AND PAINFULL, NIGGA) or you just mean “Nigga” as some sort of declarative statement. Either way, I’ll be sure to watch my f*ckin back, thanks.

The problem with the political landscape today is all you sheep blindly follow the bleatings of Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and their liberal equivalents as though they were absolute, unbiased truth. Instead of looking beyond the top layer of an issue, you blindly spout your nonsense and paint the most complex of issues with simplicity. To the statement “WE The People formed the greatest free country on Earth,” I would say American has got a lot of good things going for it, and was founded on a noble set of ideals, but we from time to time have strayed from those ideals, much to our shame (Abu Ghraib, etc) or done some terrible things. For such a statement, the far right would characterize me as hating American or as wanting to protect terrorists. As the far right seems to love quoting Thomas Jefferson these days here is a helpful piece of wisdom from Tom: "If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." Turn off Fox and read a book please.

As far as political parties go, I consider myself fairly moderate, and it saddens me that the idea that you could disagree with your fellow citizens’ political beliefs but still respect them as people seems to be a dying out as evidence by your postings. I have crossed party lines to vote for the candidate that I felt would best serve in office. Your comments, if they are indicative of the modern Republican, are more than enough to convince me that whatever the issue at hand, I sure as hell want to be on the opposite side from you. How will a robust democracy survive with that inability to compromise?

  6. I have copied and pasted the original message from Anonymouse #2 here, minus Mr. Powers' address. Please excuse this person's profanity and complete lack of social propriety, but, since I believe in the U.S. Constitution and the rights it bestows on all of its citizens, I will allow him/her to make a complete ass of themselves.

  7. These nameless hecklers can not even spell two syllable insults, no wonder why they did not have the wherewithal to properly understand this bill.

It is a wonder they managed to get through the word captcha verification process.
